May 2012
in St. Paul Minnesota a small, qualitative study was conducted to determine the
effects of autism on families. During the study, committee members of St.
Catherine and St. Thomas Universities interviewed eight different individuals,
four of which were siblings of someone with autism and the remaining four were
parents of someone with autism.
From the
study, committee members were able to gather first hand details of experiences
of life with a person with autism, the different stages one may encounter and
the overall impact of living with someone with autism.
The
results of the information collected may be beneficial to current and future
social workers alike, or anyone working directly with children diagnosed with
autism for that matter. The information provided within the study may help
those workers; better understand just how much families are impacted by the
condition.
